There is a limited amount of parking at the southern base of Blakeley Raise and a clear path that winds off into the valley and Lankrigg Moss.
Following the path into the valley and it descends to the base of the valley and crossing over a couple of streams before you begin rise. As you enter the main valley you are presented with a couple of choices as to either continue with a gentle climb to the valley head and a quick but stepper climb, or you can take the steeper but shorter route to the top ridge so that you can take into the summit of Whoap at 511m.
Either route has its advantages and both converge just after the summit before you head east towards the wall on top of the ridge.
From here it is a gentle rise and clear path alongside the wall to reach the top of Iron Crag. As you can see from our summit video, there was a dusting of snow on the day. At 640m the summit opens up to some spectacular views of Pillar and the mountains at the head of Ennerdale Vale, while over to the west, you can see from Sellafield to North Cumbria, including the Isle Of Man and right across the southern coast of Scotland.
There are options to extend the walk to a loop but as we are local we retraced our steps back to the car and a well deserved pint & warm fire in the pub!
